Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Doula?
A Doula provides emotional, educational, and logistical support throughout pregnancy, labor, birth, and postpartum. Think of a Doula as your guide on the journey to parenthood—offering reassurance, information, strategies, and encouragement tailored to your birth goals.
What makes a good Doula?
The right Doula is someone you trust and feel comfortable with. Look for alignment with your values, clear communication, and confidence in their knowledge and experience. A Doula is like a Sherpa guiding you to the summit of your birth experience, supporting both you and your partner with information, encouragement, and practical strategies.
Will you advocate for me during birth?
Yes. I am trained as a perinatal patient advocate and support your rights to make informed decisions, give or refuse consent, and be treated with respect. Advocacy is a team effort—I teach and rehearse strategies with you in prenatal sessions so that you, and your partner, feel empowered, confident, and prepared to speak-up for yourself during labor, birth, postpartum and beyond.
What kind of clients do you work with?
I work with people who want to be informed decision-makers during pregnancy and birth. Ideal clients value curiosity, inquiry, and preparation. I specialize in physiological, unmedicated birth, but I also support those choosing medical pain management or interventions. My goal is to help every birther fully understand their options and make choices aligned with their personal values.
Have you birthed before?
Yes! I chose a home birth for myself and had a positive, empowering experience. I encourage clients to explore community birth options, including birth centers and homebirths, to make truly informed decisions about the birth environment that aligns with their goals.
Do you provide postpartum support?
Yes. I provide emotional, educational, and practical support during the postpartum period, including recovery guidance, newborn care, feeding support, and helping families adjust to life with a new baby.
How does a Doula work with hospital staff or medical providers?
Doulas complement the care provided by medical professionals. We do not make medical decisions but provide continuous support, facilitate communication, and help you advocate for your decisions. A Doula works alongside your care team to ensure you feel heard, supported and informed.
Can a Doula support me if I have a C-section?
Absolutely. Doulas support both vaginal and cesarean births. We help you prepare for surgery, advocate for your preferences in the operating room (when possible), and provide postpartum support for recovery and bonding with your baby.
How much does a Doula cost?
Doula services vary based on location, experience, and the type of support offered. I offer a range of packages to accommodate different needs, including options for insurance reimbursement through Carrot, as well as Medi-Cal and Kaiser beneficiaries.
When should I hire a Doula?
It’s ideal to hire a Doula early in your pregnancy, allowing ample time for prenatal sessions, birth planning, and building a trusting relationship so you feel fully prepared and supported. However, you can hire a Doula at any stage of your pregnancy and the arrangement can be beneficial, even when time is limited.
What is the difference between a Doula and a Midwife?
A Midwife provides medical care during pregnancy and birth, including exams, monitoring, and interventions when needed. A Doula focuses on emotional, physical, and informational support—complementing the medical care provided by your Midwife or OB.
How can a Doula help with birth planning?
Doulas assist you in understanding all your options and creating a personalized birth plan. We help clarify your values and goals, discuss possible scenarios, and prepare strategies to navigate labor and delivery confidently.
